The iconic National Geographic yellow frame can be found at the edge of our picturesque Orange River mouth.

A town like Oranjemund, situated in the renowned Sperrgebiet and with all its rich history and secluded ambiance, has an incredible story to tell. The town was built in 1936 and existed exclusively to serve the diamond mining industry.

Recently, following the decimating effects of Covid-19 on tourism, OMDis supported
Venture Media’s initiative to reignite Namibia’s tourism industry.

On 28 August 2020 OMDis met with the Mr Okeri Kasete, Mr Harry Tjihukununa, and Mr Wayne Handley in Oranjemund. The aim of the meeting was to discuss future agriculture development in the Tsau //Khaeb National Park along the lower Orange River, which is currently not included in the Land Use Plan or Management Plans for the park.

Oranjemund has been a diamond mining town since 1936. At the height of diamond production life was extremely good to employees, who also happened to be the only residents.

LIKE many towns scattered across the countries of sub-Saharan Africa, Oranjemund owes its existence to mining. But when mining ends, many towns cease to exist and the local economy developed to serve mine employees and their families, grinds to a halt.

Namibia is typically known for its hot and sunny weather. This is a bit different for Oranjemunders. We are no strangers to chilly mornings and even chillier evenings, or overcast days.
